RECKONING WITH RACISM IN PROTEST COVERAGE SJMC Emerging Scholars Speaker Series

Kilgo’s research suggests protest coverage should be a part of that reckoning, as her work routinely finds that antiracism movements like Black Lives Matter are given less legitimacy than most other protests. In this talk, Kilgo will illustrate how this routine marginalization allows us to understand news coverage of protest based on a hierarchy of social struggle, and highlights the challenges that modern ideologies of racism pose to progress.
