Join us for the third of five events: “Shattered Dreams and Promises of Higher Education: How Ukrainian Youth Navigate Higher Education Despite the Odds,” with Alla Korzh. This talk will draw on a qualitative study conducted in Ukraine virtually during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Drawing on in-depth interviews with socio-economically disadvantaged Ukrainian youth, the study examines how university youth navigate higher education in a war-torn Ukraine and envision their future post-graduation.

In this talk, he will outline Du Bois's approach to the sociology of education – with examples to be drawn from works including the Atlanta University Publication "The College-Bred Negro" (1900), The Souls of Black Folk (1903), and The Brownies Book (1920-1922) – and spell out the implications of Du Bois's approach for contemporary research in the field at a time when education, including as it relates to issues of race, is central to many consequential social, political, and cultural debates.

A Paradox of Gender Differences in ICT Self-Efficacy: A Comparative Study of 49 Countries

Using the individual-level data of 15-year-old students from 49 countries that participated in PISA 2022, combined with country-level data of Gender Inequality Index, we show that gender differences in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) self-efficacy favoring boys over girls are larger, not smaller, in countries with lower levels of overall gender inequality (in health, empowerment, and labor market).
